How to Share Games on Steam 2025

In this video I’ll be showing you how to share games on Steam. To share Steam games with friends or family members you will need to use the families feature. This allows you to create or join a Steam family which will share the games that each member owns between the family. However, each game is considered one copy. This means that if you want to play a game with one other person, then at least 2 of the family members will need to have that game. With the Steam family system only eligible games can be shared. Whether or not a game is shareable is based on the developer’s choice. However, many Steam games are shareable. If you are looking to share Steam games and play together then you will need to ensure there are enough copies of the game. This can be found in the Family Management settings under Library. Additionally, shared games will appear in your Steam Library as well. In the family management library you can see how many copies of a game the family owns. This is indicated by a number at the bottom of a game. This number also indicates the total amount of family members that can play that specific game at one time. To create a Steam family you will need to go to your account details page and select Family management. This will give you the ability to either join a Steam family or create one. If neither player is already in a Steam family then you can choose to create one. However, if anybody is already in a family then leaving will result in them having to wait a year before joining a new one. Because of this it’s sometimes better to join someone’s family than create a new one. Once a family has been created you can invite someone from your friends list. When you invite someone to your Steam family you will need to choose a role, either adult or child. Selecting child will add parental controls and restrictions to the account. Because of this you will often want to choose Adult. However, this is preference. To join a Steam family you will need to be in the same household, then navigate to the Family Management setting. If you have been invited to a family then it will appear under the pending invites heading. Additionally, you will be able to see the role you have been invited to the family as. You will need to click the Accept button to join. An email will then be sent to your Steam account email to verify that you want to join the Steam family. Once you have another family member you will be able to share Steam games to another account. Again, this does require the game to be eligible for sharing to work.
