Acrocorinth. The famous center of worship of Aphrodite with the thousand sacred prostitutes. They were the most beautiful and “the cause of bankruptcy for many unfortunate sailors. In Corinth, one of the largest castles in the country has dominated the landscape for thousands of years. It is located on Acrocorinth, a 580-meter-high rock that rises from the middle of the plain. According to myth, when Apollo came into conflict with Poseidon over the dominion of the region, the gods decided that Poseidon would rule the Isthmus and Apollo would rule over Acrocorinth. In his honor, a temple was built in the city of Ancient Corinth, located at the foot of the rock. Apollo offered the hill to the goddess Aphrodite, for whom Medea built a sanctuary at the top. There, slaves and sacred prostitutes would gather, chosen for their beauty and offered as living dedications to the goddess. It is estimated that in ancient times, more than a thousand sacred prostitutes lived permanently on Acrocorinth. The sacred prostitutes of Aphrodite’s temples had a strong influence on the economic and political life of the time. The pilgrim—client—would present himself to the attendants of the goddess and be led to the temple to offer his gifts in her honor. Afterward, he would proceed to the area where the sacred prostitutes lived. They were strictly selected for their beauty and behavior. The sexual act was not considered vulgar prostitution, but a sacred ritual of union with the goddess Aphrodite. The practice of sacred prostitution in Corinth was costly for anyone who wished to unite with Aphrodite and “sacrifice” at the altar of Eros. That is why, as Strabo mentions, the sacred prostitutes became “the cause of bankruptcy for many unfortunate sailors.” The castle contains elements from all historical periods of the country. It was built by the Corinthians in the 7th century BC to control the surrounding area and was connected to the city by continuous walls. The Macedonians later reinforced the perimeter of the walls. When the Romans dominated the Greek region, the Acropolis and the city of Corinth were destroyed. A century later, Julius Caesar ordered the castle to be rebuilt using the ancient materials. The ruins of an underground Byzantine cistern today testify to the later dominance of the Byzantines over the castle, who also undertook additional fortification works. During the Frankish rule, the castle acquired a two-story turret, which served as an observation post. After the Franks, ownership passed to Italian families, who later sold it to the Greek Theodore Palaiologos. Next came the Knights Hospitaller, a Roman Catholic order of the Middle Ages, who held it for nine years. The later conquerors of the castle included Mehmed II, who built four mosques inside it, and the Venetians, who significantly improved its fortifications. The Turks settled inside it, and after the Greek War of Independence in 1821, it returned to Greek hands. Today, it stands as another important monument of Corinth, offering a delightful view of the Corinthian Gulf.
