NITI Aayog’s “India Blue Economy” Report | Deep Sea Fishing & Economic Growth | Drishti IAS

In this edition of Drishti IAS Current News, we discuss NITI Aayog’s latest report titled “India Blue Economy: Strategy for Harnessing Deep Sea and Offshore Fisheries.” Launched by NITI Aayog Member (Agriculture) Prof. Ramesh Chand and CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, this report outlines India’s comprehensive plan to unlock the vast potential of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and deep-sea fisheries. The report highlights that India, the world’s second-largest fish producer, contributes 8% of global fish output and supports nearly 30 million livelihoods. Despite this, deep-sea resources remain largely untapped. The new strategy emphasizes sustainable exploitation through technology-driven, science-based, and community-inclusive approaches. It proposes six key policy actions — improving regulations, modernizing fleets, upgrading infrastructure, promoting sustainability, mobilizing finance, and empowering local communities. The roadmap envisions a three-phase plan (2025–2033 and beyond) to establish India as a global leader in sustainable deep-sea fisheries, enhancing exports, creating jobs, and contributing to the nation’s Blue Economy.
