A Libyan militia leader has been shot dead after being lured into a gangland-style ambush in Tripoli, prompting clashes that have resulted in six more deaths. Abdel Ghani al-Kikli was allegedly shot by rival militia fighters loyal to Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the prime minister in western Libya, after a struggle to control the country’s state telecoms company, reflecting the blurred lines between armed gangs and state institutions in Libya. “This was clearly Dbeibah versus al-Kikli, and al-Kikli was wiped off the face of the earth,” said Jalel Harchaoui, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, a think tank. Accused of the torture and murder of migrants and Libyans, Kikli led the Stability Support Apparatus, one of the militias propping up the UN-recognised government in Tripoli that emerged after the Nato-backed ousting of the dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Eastern Libya is run by Khalifa Haftar, a Russian-backed warlord. Kikli was singled out by the UN last year for his ruthless and corrupt management of the state-run General Electricity Company of Libya, which gave him control over the country’s electricity supply. When auditors linked the firm to fuel smuggling they received death threats.
