HILLSBORO, Texas (KWTX) - The once-booming epicenter and jewel of I-35, the Outlet Mall of Hillsboro, has been reduced to an eyesore relic, leaving behind memories of decades of “what was.” However, the city is now looking to mark a new beginning of transformation. Opened in 1989, the outlet was a hotspot for shoppers traveling off the interstate and, at its peak, was home to more than 100 stores. From April 17-20, the city will be holding a “Mallmageddon” event as a final farewell to the building. “We’ll bid farewell to the ghost town of empty storefronts and usher in a new era for Hillsboro,” the city said in a Facebook post. A carnival will be held from April 17-20, Mallapalooza 90s Pop Up Club from April 18-19 and a Rage Room on April 19. “This is more than just a demolition party — it’s a celebration of renewal,” the city says. “The walls will crumble, the dust will rise, and we’ll send this dead mall straight to oblivion.”
