Most people had never heard this song before it became the title of a 2007 movie about Bob Dylan, “I’m not there.” Just one take was recorded during the Basement Tape sessions with The Band at Big Pink in 1967. It was never heard again officially until it became part of the soundtrack of that movie. Deciphering the indeciperable lyrics of this song is very difficult. Not only are they typically Dylan-obscure, but they are very hard to hear because of the acoustics of the recording and the disjointed way that Bob sings them. Nevertheless, I did attempt a lyric video, even though I am pretty sure I got a lot of them wrong. I looked at every lyric site and closed caption source for the lyrics and found that they all wildly differed from each other, and what I actually heard. I welcome your correction of what you hear! The song seems very much like a first draft that was never perfected and yet the singing has an emotional depth that makes the song compelling.
