Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the isolated fibular fractures or associated complex injury, the diagnosis, prognosis, and the treatment options. Fibular fracture is usually a part of a complex injury; however, it can be isolated. Complex injuries where a fractured fibula can occur: Fracture of the tibia and fibula. Ankle fracture. Pilon fracture. Maisonneuve fracture. Isolated fibular fractures are rare, and usually the result of direct trauma. The fibula is carrying about 15% of the axial load, and the site of the muscle attachment for the peroneus muscles and the flexor hallucis longus muscle. When you see a patient that has a fractured fibula and no other fracture, make sure the patient doesn’t have maisonneuve fracture, especially if there is no history of direct trauma to the leg. The x-ray shows the fracture to be rotational or oblique. Maisonneuve fracture will need surgery to fix the syndesmosis. An isolated fracture of the fibula would not need surgery.
