Tabla Solo in Teentaal by Shri Dattatray Bhave. This is from a Demo of Tabla-playing for a large group of American University Students visiting Pune. Dattatray Bhave is a senior disciple of Pt.Lalji Gokhale (1920-2002), who was the senior-most "shagird" (disciple) of Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa. Now, something about Dattatray's Guru: Lalji Gokhale had his "ganda-bandhan" (ritual initiation into learning) in 1929, at the age of 9 years from Thirakwa Khansahib; and then was associated with him for over 4 decades, till Khansahib's demise in 1976. Lalji also learned from Ustad Malang Khan and Ustad Fakir Muhammad (of Punjab Gharana) in the late-1930s when he got an appointment with All India Radio Delhi, as a novice staff musician, where the two stalwarts were senior musicians. Then Lalji came under the tutelage of Ustad Habibuddin Khan (the Doyen of the Delhi Gharana) for some time. In time, Lalji also learned from Pt.Vinayakrao Ghangrekar, to get the special nuances of 'Jhap-Taal' which was Vinayakrao's speciality. Incredible as it may seem, all this happened with the blessings of Thirakwa Khansahib, who said to his protege: "Jao, Lala; aur sab lapet lo". (Eng.Tr.- "Lala (a term of endearment), go and pull in (i.e. learn) all that you can"). Lalji's younger brother Chandrakant Gokhale also learned Tabla from Khansahib initially, but shifted to learning vocal music. He then settled into the stage, films and small-screen as a very well known actor. This tradition is now being carried forward by his son, Vikram Gokhale. The last brother in this trio, Pt.Suryakant Gokhale (otherwise known as Chotu); also became a "ganda-bandh shagird" of Thirakwa Khansahib. He had a performing career in tabla as a very accomplished but mercurial musician; however he passed away very early, pre-deceasing his two older brothers.
