Happy 101st Birthday to my great pal Patricia Morison! Pat created the role of Kate in Cole Porter’s KISS ME KATE on Broadway and took over the role of Mrs. Anna in THE KING AND I from Gertrude Lawrence and played with Yul Brynner well into her 60’s, looking like a million. Here is a precious little 7 minutes of film that I like very much. I have never shared it before, but I think Pat being over 100 is a perfect excuse. It is from a night when old friend Kaye Ballard hosted a casual dinner in Rancho Mirage/Palm Springs for me and a few of the cast of “Broadway: The Golden Age” as the film was having a sneak preview the next night (a year before we opened in theaters) as a benefit at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs. The wonderful Myvanwy Jenn (legendary Welsh actress/singer/author) cooked and Pat, Carol Lawrence, Kaye, producers Jack Molthen and Joe Fab all had the time of our lives. Most of the conversation is Kaye and Patricia remembering the great acts that they worked with throughout their 60-80 years in show business. We ate, drank, and laughed till we cried. And if you notice how quiet I am, it’s because I was shooting and eating at the same time ;-) Forgive the graininess of low lights and late nights. Happy Birthday dear, dear Pat. 101 years young. You are magic. To give the rest of the world an idea how young, how brilliant and how loving she is, let me tell you a short story: When I backed my rental car into a wall in a parking garage and lamented to Pat how worried I was that it was going to cost a fortune (I, indie filmmaker with no budget, foolishly skipped insurance), she saved the day. She took me to “Pep Boys” in LA and chose a kit for me to cover it up. Sure enough the scratches were miraculously hidden. THEN she coaxed me to return the car very cautiously. “Park with the sun shining on the wrong side of the car so that they won’t see our repair job. And if they tell you to turn it around, tell them your late for your plane!” Well, it worked and was one of the many, many kindnesses that this great lady has done for me. Pat, I miss our Thursday afternoons at the Farmers’ Market for lunch, dinners in the back garden at our little boîte you found, and sitting in your place being regaled with stories. I’ll be in LA before too, too long and I can’t wait to see you my dear. Happy, Happy Birthday Pat!
