This video is best watched at 480p. Mario Lanza's truly heart-felt, unsurpassed vocal interpretation of Silent Night, together with paintings of Christmas which are appropriate to the song lyrics and by well-known old master artists, blend together to remind the viewer of the wonder of Christmas. The cathedral shown in the beginning of the video is Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Notre Dame, Our Lady (i.e. Mary), is shown in the photo close-up of the main, front rose window, holding the baby Jesus with an angel on either side of them. The rose window behind the Virgin's head is meant to represent a large, radiant halo. The paintings of twenty-three different old master artists are used for this video. Two artists are represented by two paintings each: Peter Paul Rubens and Francois Boucher. The names of the 23 different artists whose paintings are used are listed in the order of their painting's appearance in the video. The artists are: Peter Paul Rubens, Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre, Domingos Sequeira, Luca Giordano, Francois Boucher, Antonio Allegri (known as Correggio), Peter Paul Rubens, Govert Flinck, Francois Boucher, Annibale Carraci, Jean LeClerc, Jacob de Backer, Marten de Vos, Antonio Balestra, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (detail of his painting only), Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Anton Rafael Mengs, Francesco Bassano, Charles Le Brun, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Nicolas Poussin, Federico Barocci, Carlo Dolci, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. These painters were masters of the art of painting, just as Mario Lanza was and continues to be, through such venues as YouTube, films and vocal recordings, a master of song. Special thanks to the Moravian Music Festival Choir and Orchestra for submitting their choir photo for public domain use.
