The Petaloudes (Valley of the Butterflies) is home to thousands of the Rhodes subspecies of the Jersey Tiger Moth. Visitors can witness a spectacular phenomenon which occurs only rarely in nature. Huge numbers of butterflies congregate in this small valley during the final stage of their life cycle. The Oriental Sweetgum trees give off a scent that attracts the moths and creates a unique biotope. [Scent, from resin is used by the local churches, to make frankincense and smells like vanilla.] In July and August moths mate... Hush, hush... butterflies are resting here cThe moths cannot eat during this final phase of their life cycle, so they rest here to conserve energy. A small river, named Pelecanos, flows down to a narrow valley, ending with a waterfall that tumbles into a green pool. The curious fact is the sweet water crab. Pay attention to his back – three is a butterfly engraved on it's carapace !
