African literature has long been ignored in the mainstream discourse especially when measuring the progress of Africa and also when telling stories of Africa. Books written by Africans have always been sidelined to create room for the western gaze of Africa. However, in order to find the meaning of our own lives and not get confused about our changing identities, we have to keep our stories alive and that includes prioritizing the ideas and works created by African people. With the rise of AI, there’s a lot of talk about how books don’t matter anymore but it is quite the opposite. The more cognitive degeneracy the mainstream is pushing people towards, the more we should read as a form of activism because our memory, our recollection of today is important and shouldn’t be forgotten. If you forget your history, you will be easily manipulated. This is a fight of sticks and stones, perhaps an invisible one, but also an important one because it is about preserving dignity and humanity. Books: 1.
