St. Joan loved the priesthood and the hierarchy. She always had a priest near at hand. On the way to lift the siege of Orleans, she had them lead the army in procession with a Crucifix, chanting hymns. She had them handy to confess the dying … friend or foe. The supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls. Even in the darkest moments of her trial, never did she attack the person of her adversary, Bishop Pierre Cauchon or the priests assisting him. She did, however, frequently warn this bishop of Beauvais of the danger into which he was placing his soul by conducting such a kangaroo court. “You say you are my judge. Take care what you are doing; for in truth I am sent by God, and you place yourself in great danger.” She finally told him that it was through him that she was dying. In all the recorded notes of the trial, not once was she disrespectful. Yet, she refused to submit to his evil plan and appealed to the Pope and to God as the final Judge. In this, she did well. She understood clearly that when authority was being abused, obedience was not required. Thus, she refused to answer various questions that did not pertain to her or her case. In any case, St Joan teaches us God loves the priesthood and will not work without His priests. How well she is met on this vigil of Pentecost when we have to cope with abuses of authority all the way to the highest places of the Church and state.
