Discontinued in 2007, the ref. 5970 is one of the most admired modern Grand Complication from Patek Philippe. It increased the size of its case to a much bolder 40mm while retaining ‘vintage’ traits such as the square pushers and dauphine hands reminiscent of the 1518 and early 2499. Already cherished by collectors with its default silvered dial, the present reference 5970R-019 is a highly sought-after model of the perpetual calendar chronograph. Very few pieces are known to have been made, combining a rose gold case with a black dial. This collector item displays a beautiful black dial with a day & month window at 12 o’clock and three sub-dials, including a 30-minute counter with leap year indicator, a seconds counter with a 24-hour indicator, and a date and moon phase indicator at 6 o’clock. The dial gives off an elegant feel with gold applied baton-style hour markers and leaf shaped hands which match the case material. The impressive perpetual calendar automatically adjusts for leap years and different month lengths and to top it off, is coupled with a column wheel chronograph function. The watch is powered by the Caliber CH 27-70 Q, the last non-manufacture perpetual calendar based on the legendary Lemania 2310. The intricate hand-wound movement is visible through the sapphire crystal case-back. Interestingly, while this special order 5970 was released almost 10 years after the original run ceased, it still features a Geneva Seal – which was last used in 2009. This attests that the movement assembly and finishing on this 5970R-019 remains exactly the same as the initial production.
