What happened next was sudden, violent, and terrifying. Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks. Slovenia, nestled between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, is a country rich in natural beauty and ecological diversity. Roughly sixty percent of its landscape is covered in forest, making it one of the greenest countries in Europe. The village of Škofljica is a semi-rural community bordering a stretch of dense, hilly woodland teeming with wildlife. Broadleaf trees like beech, oak, and hornbeam dominate the canopy, while shrubs such as hazel, dogwood, and elderberry flourish in the understory. Wild raspberry, bilberry, and strawberry bushes dot the forest floor, providing nourishment for bears and other foragers. Large plant-eating animals in the region include red deer, roe deer, and wild boars. Common predators include Eurasian lynx, golden eagles, wolves, and, of course, the brown bear, which remains one of Slovenia's most iconic and controversial species. With human populations expanding and wildlife protection laws keeping bear numbers high, encounters between bears and people have become more common—and occasionally violent. On May 21st, 2025, as the light filtered through the forest canopy, the sun crept toward the horizon. That time of evening when it is light enough to see, but it is increasingly muted. We call it twilight, but those in bear country might refer to it as Bear Thirty. A 59-year-old woman, whom we will refer to as Nina, was returning from a hike with her dog, whom we will call Medo. The two routinely hiked this trail and knew many of the locals who called this area home. No source indicated that Nine carried bear spray or a firearm, but Medo was by her side, investigating anything that piqued his interest, as he always did. Now Nina had to be aware of the recent brown bear problems that had occurred in Slovenia over the past year. In March of 2024, a 31-year-old woman was chased off a cliff by a brown bear while on an evening stroll with a male companion. She died as a result of the pursuit and injuries sustained in her fall. In 2022, the nation reported two bear attacks, and public opinion had begun to favor a hunting season to reduce bear numbers, but it had yet to be implemented. As Nina and Medo made their way down the trail, a flash of movement in the brush drew their attention. From between the trees, a shape moved—large, fast, and brown. A bear. Maybe it had been startled. Maybe it was already irritated by something we’ll never know. But within moments, the predator had closed the distance and launched into an attack. She didn’t stand a chance. The bear struck, clawing and biting. The dog may have barked or run, but the woman took the full force of the assault. Somehow, miraculously, she survived those critical seconds. The bear didn’t linger—it retreated just as quickly as it had come, disappearing into the thickets and vanishing down the wooded slope. Cries for help echoed through the woods. Someone heard. Someone called. As of the latest updates, the woman remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Details regarding surgeries or specific wounds have not yet been released. Slovenian wildlife officials have since increased patrols in the area and urged residents to avoid the vicinity while monitoring continues. The bear’s age, sex, and health condition remain unknown. It is unclear whether the bear was protecting a cached animal carcass or other food source, and there is no mention of cubs being present at the attack site. And, the three dollars per month goes a long way in helping me continue to produce educational and entertaining content like this. This attack occurred just days after Slovenia's government approved the culling of two hundred and six brown bears from its estimated population of one thousand, citing rising incidents involving livestock and human safety. Slovenia has an estimated brown bear population of around one thousand bears in a land area of just over eight thousand square miles. That amounts to approximately one bear for every eight square miles—one of the highest densities in Europe outside of the Carpathians. According to the Slovenian Environment Agency, two bear attacks were recorded in two thousand twenty-two, and another attack occurred in April two thousand twenty-three when a man walking his dog in Želimlje was bitten by a bear.
