If you're not planting in the fall... you're missing out on one of the easiest and most productive seasons in the garden. The bugs chill out, the weather’s cooler, and the flavor? Way better. Here's what I'm dropping in the soil right now: 🥬 What to Plant in Fall ✅ Radishes – Fast and reliable. Some mature in 25 days. Great to sneak in before frost. ✅ Lettuce – Loose leaf, romaine, buttercrunch... loves cool weather. ✅ Arugula – Spicy in summer, mellow and rich in the fall. Cut-and-come-again style. ✅ Spinach – Cold-hardy and sweeter after a frost. ✅ Bok choy & tatsoi – Grow fast and add some variety to your greens. ✅ Mustard greens – Heat-tolerant and cold-hardy. Flavor sharpens with chill. ✅ Beets – Sow now for baby beets or just enjoy the greens. ✅ Turnips – Another double-harvest crop. Fast growing, and the greens are underrated. ✅ Kohlrabi – Space alien vibes, mild crunch. Grows well in fall. ✅ Carrots – Slow starter, but cooler weather makes them way sweeter. ✅ Cilantro – Actually prefers the cooler temps. Great for fall sowing. 💡 Pro Tips Succession planting still works! Sow a new batch every 1–2 weeks until your frost date. Use shade cloth in early September to keep the soil moist and cool enough for germination. Add a row cover or cold frame in late fall to extend your season even further. Fall soil is still warm from summer — seeds germinate faster than in spring. 🌱 Farm & Field Takeaway: Your garden doesn’t have to end in August. Fall is for the fast growers, the cool weather lovers, and the sweet greens. Toss some seeds in, and you’ll be harvesting salads, stir-fries, and roots deep into November — even later if you cover right. Don’t waste that space!
