Turbinates are two or three long bony and soft tissue processes running over the side wall of the nose on either sides. all of us have three, named inferior, middle and superior turbinates and one inferior turbinates can be seen as we lift the tip of the nose in front of the mirror with a bit of lighting. These are normal structures which are situated on the side walls of the nose and they are made up of bone and soft tissue. If there is any inflammatory process that is going in the nose on a long term especially then these turbinate can swell up gradually over a period of time. Very gradual process, typically seen in people with dust allergy. There is a constant exposure to dust that produces an inflammation of the surface of the turbinates and consequently the turbinates will start swelling up on a permanent basis. A turbinate swelling can happen also in an acute infective status but is only a temporary one. As soon as the infection is cleared, then turbinate will shrink to their original size. Whereas a chronic turbinate enlargement in cases of dust allergy and all, they don’t respond very well to medications even if you use decongestants like otrivin and nasivion, they shrink only for a period of 6 to 8 hours, as soon as the medicine effect is there. After that they come back to their swollen state.
