The Yale Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year fellowship that focuses on the development of deep medical knowledge as well as the patient care skills and surgical expertise applicable to the subspecialty of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Subspecialty clinical, surgical and didactic education will concentrate on the understanding, prevention, and treatment of injuries that occur in active patients of all ages and abilities. The fellow will be exposed to and see patients in several ambulatory clinic sites across the Yale New Haven Health System and operate at Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital Saint Raphael’s Campus, McGivney Advanced Surgery Center, and Greenwich Hospital. The fellowship faculty includes Drs. Christina Allen, John Fulkerson, Elizabeth Gardner, Andrew Jimenez, and Michael Medvecky, as well as our Primary Care Sports Medicine physician Samantha Smith, MD. Clinical Work: The fellow is a critical member of the Sports Medicine service, participating in all aspects of clinical and surgical care. The fellow is to provide surgical decision making and perform logistical functions preceding, during, and after surgical procedures. The burden of certain clinical tasks may be assumed by the fellow, which will afford the attending surgeons greater availability to perform attending specific tasks, education, and research. Once the fellow demonstrates autonomy, as judged by consensus opinion of the Sports Medicine section attendings, the fellow may be allowed to perform operative procedures independently with direct oversight of the attending. Education: The fellow is expected to be one of the primary educators for residents, medical students, and advanced practice providers. Didactically, the fellow will be responsible for the organization and execution of the Sports Medicine section’s weekly meeting; a rotating schedule to include MRI conference, indications conference, journal club, and Orthopaedic Knowledge Update – Sports Medicine review sessions. The fellow will also be expected to present at Yale Grand Rounds no less than once per academic year. Lastly, it is encouraged that the fellow participates in extra-curricular teaching opportunities such as the Fundamentals in Arthroscopy Course at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL. Research: The fellow will be expected to produce at least one peer-reviewed publishable article during his/her one-year tenure. As with the clinical and educational activities described above, the fellow will work closely as a research mentor for the Yale Orthopaedic Surgery residents as well as Yale School of Medicine medical students who demonstrate an interest in Orthopaedic Surgery. The fellow will be formally evaluated bi-annually by the program director utilizing a 360-degree performance assessment.
