Recognized as the world’s most experienced active heart transplant surgeon, he has performed over 1,500 heart transplants. His team is known for taking on some of the most complex cardiac cases. In December 2018, under his leadership, the care team at the University of Chicago Medicine made medical history by performing two triple-organ transplants within 27 hours, replacing the failing hearts, livers, and kidneys of two 29-year-old patients. Globally, only 42 such procedures have ever been performed, and Dr Jeevanandam has completed the heart transplant operation in all 17 of those conducted at UChicago Medicine, where he serves as Chief of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the Heart and Vascular Center.
