Row is brewing between religious leaders and elders in Central region over circumcision roles as Kikuyu elders popularly know as Kiama Kia ma tell off church over matters rite of passage. Led by Nganga wa Kiarie who is the Chairman Kiama kia ma Thika subcounty, the elders said the church has overstepped it's mandate by presiding over circumcision of young boys instead of sticking to the pulpit and offering spiritual nourishment. Kiarie however, said that there must be a clear boundary on cultural matters and religious matters adding that matters concerning rite of passage should be a preserve of the elders. He was speaking at Thika during a ceremony where over 500 boys transited from childhood to manhood. "Pastors should desist from performing cultural rituals and concentrate on spiritual matters." Said Kiarie. John Njiru who is the deputy speaker Kiambu County Assembly and the area MCA however said the government was investigating the affairs of illegal splinter groups that are misleading young boys by propagating for societal vices like premarital sex, female genital mutilation and drinking of alcohol. Njiru however, praised the Kiama kia ma elders for sticking to the good cultural practices in advicing the teenage initiates to desist from alcohol, drugs and other indiscipline. He confirmed both county and national government's commitment in promoting culture saying to confirm this, Kenya has a cabinet Secretary for Culture. Njuguna Musembi said the rite of passage symbolized by the cut was a sacred stage in the boy's life marking the transition from boyhood to adulthood and that the rites are compulsory demanding meticulous and detailed observation. Musembi said the church is only greedy for money. Kenya Digital News brings you the latest news as they happen in a DIGITAL way.
