NORTH KESTEVEN PARISH #33: EAGLE AND SWINETHORPE Eagle and Swinethorpe – “Oak Tree Wood and Sveinn’s Farmstead” Here’s a parish that proves beyond all reasonable doubt that village names really don’t mean what you might think! This is Eagle and Swinethorpe, located in the Northwestern corner of North Kesteven between North Scarle and Doddington and Whisby. Despite the name, it’s made up of at least five different settlements. These are Eagle, Eagle Moor, Eagle Barnsdale, Eagle Hall and Swinethorpe – and none of them have anything to do with animals. Scholars believe that the nameEagle means "Oak-tree wood or clearing” and therefore there’s no connection to the bird. It’s a similar story with Swinethorpe, whose name would usually indicate a connection to pigs, but in this case its all to do with an Old Norse farmer! Eagle is quite a difficult village to understand, because its so spread out all over the place. Whilst the main village is clustered around the church, further afield, the smaller outlying settlements have some really interesting stuff. It was at Eagle Hall where a preceptory of the Knights Templar was founded by King Stephen. In 1312 it passed to the Hospitallers and became one of only two Templar infirmaries in England. Eagle Barnsdale features a familiar railway line, and Eagle Moor has a house called The Jungle.
