Are We Expats or Immigrants? Understanding the Difference There's a lot of debate about the terms "expat" and "immigrant," and we wanted to share our perspective on what these words really mean. While we often call ourselves expats (because that's what most foreigners in Ecuador use), we actually consider ourselves immigrants. Here's why: EXPATS are typically in a new country temporarily—whether for months or years. They don't plan to settle permanently and often keep one foot in their home country. This is a completely valid lifestyle choice! IMMIGRANTS, on the other hand, are "all in." They move with the intention of staying permanently and building a life in their new country. The key difference? Intention. Your intention shapes how you approach everything about life abroad—from learning the language to integrating into the community. And here's the thing: these categories aren't set in stone. An expat can become an immigrant, and an immigrant might eventually leave. It's all about mindset and plans. When we moved to Ecuador, we came with that immigrant permanency in mind. We're here to stay, build roots, and make this our home. What about you? How do you see yourself?
