Summary Eugene O Neill was an Irish-American playwright who introduced techniques of realism and exoressionism into American drama. The play was partially inspired by the sinking of Titanic and Stephen Crane' short story 'The Open Boat'. The main characters are a dancer, a gentleman and a sailor(West Indian Mulattoo). All of them are victims of ship wreck. They strong wind lashing at the boat and scorching heat squash their plans. The gentleman and dancer yearn for a drop of water. They are surrounded by sharks. The dancer and gentleman talk about their bitter memories before ship wreck and about the captain who shot himself thinking he was responsible for the disaster. The gentleman narrates his story of escape from the ship and satirically presents a menu from his pocket which lists of many delicacies. The dancer talks about a man who gave her a kiss just before the tragedy struck. She has a precious gift with her, which was gifted by a Duke. The sailors presence irritates the two and they beg for some water to drink. They think that the sailor has stolen the water. The sailor sings a monologue to himself thinking the sharks won't reach to him.The dancer offers her diamond necklace and even her body for a drop of water. The sailor repeatedly says "I've no water". Finally the dancer turns desperate because of thirst and dances in a frenzied manner and dies. The sailor degenerates to cannibalism and intends to eat the lifeless dancer. The gentleman stops him to preserve the dignity of the dancer in her death. In the end both of them die and the play closes with only the necklace left shining on the deck of the boat. The play is a dismal statement on the meaning of human life. It also portraits the hopelessness of human beings in unusual situations where money, status, class have no value.
