The Origins of the Modern Secular University

One of the seminal shifts of the eighteenth century is the attempt to adopt the methodology of the natural sciences to the humanities, and in particular to move away from the latter's belief that language, which is by one and all recognized as a distinctive feature of human nature, is an attribute of being made in imago Dei. It is an experimental attempt to apply Baconian science to the distinctive feature of humanity. Eighteenth-century French theorists like Rousseau posit the idea that language originates in emotional expressions, in 'grunts and cries'. These grunts and cries gain articulate sound when there is a social consensus that the sounds mean something rationally distinctive. Yet from the outset, the problem with this view is that for society to arrive at such a consensus, it would require language to determine. This fatal argumentative flaw does not deter the attempt to either attribute language to the power of reason (as per the philosophers) or to feeling (as per the poets). Yet in both cases, it is humanity itself which is posited the power of determining meaning through its linguistic utterance. And with a few exceptions like Coleridge, the traditional view that poetry is essentially mimetic and is a function of bearing the imago Dei, is rejected entirely in favour of Romanticism's "universal progressive poetics".
