In a joint operation with local authorities, over 200 animals, including dogs, cats, birds and other wild animals were rescued from an illegally run facility in Saligrama, Udupi, Karnataka. The animals were found in deplorable conditions and have now been moved to safety. Animal hoarders must not be mistaken for responsible animal shelters. Animal hoarders are persons whose unhealthy mental condition or compulsion of hoarding huge numbers of animals can cause suffering and criminal behaviour with horrific consequences for animals. Hoarders gather a huge number of animals and fail to provide for their most basic physical and social needs, including food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and sanitary living conditions. Proper intervention is essential to prevent a relapse of hoarders’ behaviour including ideally a ban on contact with animals and psychiatric counselling.
