Scripture Readings from the new Sermon Series After a long list of begats Matthew continues with these words, “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way…” Century after century of NORMAL births, we finally come to something UNIQUE. This unique entrance teaches us something about WHO Jesus is. He is born of woman, which means He is fully human. He can identify with us. He knows our pains, our sorrows, and our limitations. He knows what it is like to live in a life filled with the effects of sin. Jesus’ humanity also means He is mortal, He can die. But Jesus is also conceived by the Holy Spirit (aka He has no earthly father), which means He is more than man…He is fully God. As God, He knows the thoughts and intentions of man. He is able to do the miraculous, walk on water, multiply fish, turn water into wine, and calm a storm. Jesus’ divinity also means that He is immortal, that though He dies He will rise again. That His death is unlike other human deaths and therefore will do something no other merely human death could accomplish…He will save us from our sins. This is why Matthew pens, “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).” When babies are born, we often wonder, what will he sound like, what will he be like, what profession will he take, what personality will he have. As we come to the birth of Jesus this Sunday, there is no guess work involved with this baby, for we know exactly WHO this child is…He is the Messiah who will die for the sins of the world.
