Early models of the bilingual lexicon, such as the Word Association Model and Concept Mediation Model, proposed different ways in which second-language (L2) words connect to meanings through the native language (L1). Later, the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM) explained how these connections change with proficiency, suggesting that beginners rely more on L1 translations while more advanced bilinguals access concepts directly from L2 words. However, research on lexical recognition demonstrates that even highly proficient bilinguals show cross-language activation, meaning that words, sounds, and structures from both languages are active in parallel during reading or listening. Studies of speech perception, visual word recognition, and sentence processing show that bilingual comprehension is influenced by phonological similarity, cognates, orthographic overlap, and sentence context. At the syntactic level, bilinguals may also show cross-language influences in parsing strategies and grammatical preferences, sometimes allowing the second language to reshape processing patterns in the first language. Because both languages remain active, bilingual speakers must rely on cognitive control mechanisms to manage competition between languages. These mechanisms may involve inhibition, attention, and executive control processes that help bilinguals select the appropriate language while suppressing interference from the other.
