On my notebook for Niemi, I noticed he rarely ever tried to cheat on squaring up to the players. He stayed In between the top of the blue paint & the center of the crease. He was a big guy so this was perfect placement for him. I've seen goaltenders like Ilya Bryzgalov who play very aggressive on one timers which can take you out of position on rebounds because you can overshoot & end up sliding opposite of the puck bounces. When Niemi gave up rebounds, (which I saw a lot of) he would not panic. He would sit on his bottom & use his skates to revolve him around the paint while stretching his limbs out forcing the shooters to hurry. Kind of like in Hasek form. Maybe he thought this would give him more traction when he had to slide back. Either way it worked for him. Still a very talented goalie today.
