Election 2026 News: Poll Dates For 5 States Today; West Bengal Sees TMC-BJP Fight Over SIR Issue

The Election Commission is set to announce poll dates for five states including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry at 4 pm today. In West Bengal, the contest is primarily between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has emerged as a contentious issue, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staging a sit-in protest and planning a march from College Square to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata. Around 60 lakh voters have been deleted during the SIR process, with another 60 lakh placed under logical discrepancy schedules. The TMC has accused the Election Commission of working at the behest of the BJP and described the SIR process as backdoor NRC aimed at deleting genuine TMC voters. The BJP has raised issues of infiltration and alleged disrespect to President Droupadi Murmu.
