A 2020 study by Lancet Global Health says that breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women in sub-Saharan Africa. The 5-year survival rates of all stages in African countries, range from 20% to 85%, which much lower than those in high-income countries, normally above 85%. VOA’s Abby Sun spoke to Dr. Lisa Newman, a surgical oncologist and chief of breast surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine-New York Presbyterian Hospital. She discusses her extensive research on breast cancer disparity associated with ethnic backgrounds. Dr. Newman also speaks on her findings with a new field of research called oncologic anthropology and how it relates to the prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer in African-American women. #LisaNewman #breastcancer #women #AfricanAmerican - - - - For more visit our news site, voaafrica.com Follow VOA Africa on Facebook: https://bit.ly/34fI6R5 Follow VOA Africa on Instagram: https://bit.ly/3jhzuzN Follow VOA Africa on Twitter: https://bit.ly/2HDhRME - - - - - VOA Africa reaches more than 25 million people on the web, social media, radio and television.
