The highlight of David Peel & the Lower East Side's debut album Have a Marijuana in 1968 was the song that would become his anthem: "I Like Marijuana." Peel was a fixture around High Times, so it was easy to convince him to record a new version of the song for Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML in 1995. He'd become friendly with the Boston band the 360's fronted by Audrey Clark. They teamed up on this hard-rocking rendition. "I Like Marijuana" is based on two other songs: "Hully Gully" and "Peanut Butter." Both were written by Fred Sledge Smith and Clifford Goldsmith. Peel shares songwriting credit with them. This version of "I Like Marijuana" was recorded at Fort Apache Studios in Cambridge, MA, produced by Peel and Eric Russell and engineered by Carl Proctor. It was mixed by Michael Nuceder and Jamie Campbell at Electric Lady Studios in New York. The musicians on the song are: David Peel - vocals Audrey Clark - vocals Eric Russell - guitar Bill Armstrong - slide guitar Steve Cleary - keyboards Brian Evans - bass Bill McKay - drums Steve Bloom - backup vocals Andrew Hoffman - backup vocals Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML was produced by Steve Bloom for High Times, Eric Steenstra for NORML and Philip Walden for Capricorn Records in 1995. The album was a fundraiser for NORML. It sold more than 150,000 copies. Hempilation 2: Free the Weed (A Benefit for NORML) was released in 1998. #Hempilation25 producers: Steve Bloom for CelebStoner and Michael O'Malley for Curved Papers.
