The highlight of David Peel & the Lower East Side's debut album Have a Marijuana in 1968 was the song that would become his anthem: "I Like Marijuana." Peel was a fixture around High Times, so it was easy to convince him to record a new version of the song for Hempilation: Freedom Is NORML in 1995. He'd become friendly with the Boston band the 360's fronted by Audrey Clark. They teamed up on this hard-rocking rendition. "I Like Marijuana" is based on two other songs: "Hully Gully" and "Peanut Butter." Both were written by Fred Sledge Smith and Clifford Goldsmith. Peel shares songwriting credit with them. This version of "I Like Marijuana" was recorded at Fort Apache Studios in Cambridge, MA, produced by Peel and Eric Russell and engineered by Carl Proctor. It was mixed by Michael Nuceder and Jamie Campbell at Electric Lady Studios in New York.
