A high precision, air-bearing based, diamond-turning lathe and metrology station for matching ID to OD size to 50 millionths of an inch has been successfully created. The ability to measure the outside diameter of the spool for size, roundness, and concentricity, and then apply the desired clearance in preperation for boring the sleeve to match, allowed the customer to produce a precision valve that has not previously been available on the market. Using ABTech's air-bearing linear slides, high-speed air-bearing spindle, rotary air-bearing table, central machine tool controller, and custom software, engineering and manufacturing this custom work cell was quick. And the end result was a precision valve assembly that will last longer in the transmission and produce a higher quality rebuild for the industry.
