Are Zirconia Dental Implants the Future of Dental Implants? Before we begin, you can find me on Instagram, or read the more detailed blog article on this subject, by following this link: https://linktr.ee/dr.sehmi In the video, I cover a lot of the science behind the implants, but there are other aspects, like cost (an important one!) that I do not cover. Zirconia dental implants are very difficult to manufacture, and they are still a very specialist product, so the cost is significantly higher. You can expect the cost of this dental implant to be almost double the cost of a normal titanium dental implant. One aspect in particular is very difficult to replicate on Zr implants, and this is the surface texture. Standard titanium dental implants will typically (not always) have a micro etched or sand blasted surface, making it rough. This is an advantage because it increases the surface area to the bone (Bone in contact, BIC), and we know that bone in contact with the implant is an important factor in long term success of the dental implant. We can increase BIC by increasing the size of the dental implant, and changing its surface. However there have been studies comparing a rough to smooth surface, and they have hardly shown a difference, if the implant size is the same. But this is one of the things in Dentistry that most dental implant surgeons will just feel more comfortable with a rough surface (including me!) Making a rough surface on zirconia is extremely difficult, and hence expensive. I will be writing a more detailed blog about this subject, as I think its interesting, although I am not convinced that these implants have any advantage over titanium dental implant - for the vast majority of people. (obviously for those who have allergies to titanium, its a good choice - but this is extremely rare) You can see my blog articles here (link below), and if you like, you can sign up to my newsletter (written by me personally, not AI, not a marketing company etc), and I will notify you when there is a new blog post, or video that I am releasing. https://linktr.ee/dr.sehmi
