Minor League Baseball players will earn as little as $5/hour this year—and will not be paid at all for work during spring training—due to exemptions that MLB has sought from basic laws that protect workers in every other industry in America. Major League Baseball is exempt from antitrust laws that protect American workers from monopolies. Unlike their Major League counterparts, Minor League players do not have a union. As a result, MLB owners use their monopoly power to set the terms of Minor League contracts. This year, Minor League players will earn an annual salary of between $8,000 and $14,000, making them among the lowest paid workers in America.
