When I got this prebuilt I had lofty goals: I wanted to transplant the whole thing in a new case and add a PSU (with an ADD2PSU) board, but after a bit of investigating it became clear that I would also have to chop the DELL case because all the stand-offs anywhere else but the ATX standard location. With this in mind I decided to keep it in its case and that means a non-powered GPU: enter the GTX 1050TI. I upgraded the RAM to Dual Channel because 1stick of RAM is apparently a thing Dell gives to their customers and made some minor modifications to secure the GPU and the HDD. This is also the first time when I ended up downgrading the CPU for better performance. The i7 7700 this originally shipped with was thermally overwhelming the cooler and running close to its 100C TJmax and the frequency fluctuations and associated power spikes really hurt performance. After swapping it with the 7600 which is basically the same CPU without Hyperthreading the situation improved dramatically as the CPU never went above 77C and every single game I tested posted better results – something that really goes against conventional wisdom. Actually the only app that behaved as expected was Cinebench, but while still capable, rendering should not be the primary purpose of a machine such as this.
