Cigar Relative Humidity With Boveda's Rob Relative humidity may seem a bit conceptual and abstract; what is it, really? In the context of cigars, it's often associated with the terms "moisture content" and "water activity." Every organic product has a moisture content. Boveda uses water activity meters to measure the moisture content of cigars at their peak quality. Most cigars store well between 65 and 70 percent relative humidity. All organic products have certain amounts of moisture they like to hang on to. For example, Paul and Rob snipped a carrot and put it in a water activity meter, and it read 99%. Cigars, on the other hand, are much drier, closer to the ambient air humidity, and tend to match ambient humidity. Relative humidity is simply the amount of water vapor in the air. Hence, you need to get the humidor's relative humidity to the cigar's target interior RH. Then, the cigar will eventually come to equilibrium with the surrounding relative humidity. Therefore, your Boveda packs aren't directly affecting your cigars. Rather, the packs push moisture into the air, and the cigar eventually levels out its humidity level to match the air. Because of this, the humidification process is quite gentle. Hence, you don't have to worry about cigars suddenly gaining too much moisture from your Boveda packs if you monitor regularly. When a cigar takes in too much moisture, it becomes bulbous and can easily split during smoking, or exhibit an inferior flavor profile. Gentle humidification like Boveda packs prevent this sort of problem. Warmer air holds more humidity, and colder air holds less humidity. Hence, in warmer climates, you'll need to be extra-vigilant against mold growth. Also, fast fluctuations in temperature can quickly change your relative humidity and, consequently, cigar moisture levels. However, Boveda packs will adapt to more gradual fluctuations, such as seasonal differences. Boveda offer 6 different relative humidity levels, with 5 primary levels: 62, 65, 69 for airtight humidors, and 72 and 75 for wood desktop humidors.
