This is an unedited video of the placement of a cast for the management of metatarsal fractures in a dog. It’s quite long! It’s not for entertainment, but if you’re a vet, nurse or tech placing a cast, you might find it useful. Up to 60% of dogs having a cast suffer complications, and the consequences of those complications can be catastrophic, or at least inconvenient and expensive. In people, risk factors for cast complications are placement under sedation/ anaesthesia, and non-verbal patients. All dogs are generally both of those! Because of these daunting statistics, many vets, nurses and techs, are scared of casting. But they shouldn’t be, with careful technique and thorough owner communication, they can be safe and effective. This dog ended up wearing this cast for several months, and no significant complications were observed.
