New Stem Cell Therapy for COVID-19 Finds Success in Clinical Trial at Baptist Health

Three COVID-19 patients at Baptist Hospital of Miami – all critically ill with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) – are the first in the U.S. to successfully be treated with umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells. In a clinical trial being conducted under an emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Baptist Health physicians Guenther Koehne, M.D., Ph.D., and Javier Pérez-Fernández, M.D., safely administered the new treatment to patients through intravenous infusions of experimental umbilical cord lining-derived stem cells (ULSC). The stem cells were produced by RESTEM, a leading-edge biotechnology company dedicated to the discovery and development of cell-based therapeutics. RESTEM’s cells are grown from umbilical cord tissue by a proprietary process and reduce inflammation, thereby allowing tissue regeneration and healing to occur. Guenther Koehne: We were lucky that we were able to collaborate with a company in California that has a bank of mesenchymal stem cells that we thought may be appropriate approach to treat these patients. Javier Perez-Fernandez, M.D.: When patients with COVID-19 come to the hospital, some of them suffer worsening on the respiratory condition. When they require a mechanical ventilator, and they're admitted to an intensive care unit with this, what we call crisis, we have multiple elements to treat. But one of the particular novelties that we've been using this is stem cell transfusion. Stem cells seem to modify the cytokine storm and it's experimental treatment, which seem to actually have good outcomes on our patients. Rafael Gonzalez, Ph.D.: We've spent about 12 years here developing a cell-based therapy. We spent a lot of time working on cells and looking at the immune system and trying to understand properties of the immune system because all diseases have an immune component to them. And understanding how we can use cells to our advantage, as these are things that are naturally occurring in our body. And we believe that we have a really, really strong product here in what we produce and what we've done throughout all these years of research. Lacey: Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. You guys are the reason why I'm here. So thank you. Crowd: [crosstalk 00:01:29] We love you. We love you, [Lacey 00:01:35].
