This is me narrating part of Chapter 7, Truth / Wowicake, from the Joseph Marshall III book The Lakota Way: Stories and lessons for living. Published by Viking Compass. Why, you ask? Well, today is Valentine’s Day and I have issues with seeing red flags (and yellow flags) clearly, so sharing one of my favorite stories about seeing reality as it is seems like a perfect way to celebrate an otherwise meh day. This story is a beautiful fit for anyone healing from CPTSD or similar life experiences. It helped me. There are 12 chapters in the Lakota Way book and each chapter is about a different Lakota value: umility, perseverance, respect, honor, love, sacrifice, truth, compassion, bravery, fortitude, generosity, and wisdom. The audiobook version is narrated by Joseph Marshall III himself, and it’s a storytelling work of art. There are parts that always make me cry, and I don’t cry easily. Marshall’s stories and insights are complex, personal, and timeless. And his narration is mesmerizing. No matter how many times I listen to him tell these stories, I always get something new out of them. These are stories about doing the right thing, staying true to your values, and having compassion for all (even the humble house beetle). Their life lessons are often squarely at odds with the values of the dominant tiers of society-— and that’s no doubt one of the reason I love and value them so much! If you enjoyed this story, I encourage you to check out the whole Lakota Way book. Marshall’s The Journey of Crazy Horse is fascinating and heartbreaking and amazingly relevant as well. We are not powerless. We can affect others. We can change reality. Thanks for tuning in! Sasha
