This week I decided to show you guys a taste of Shanghainese Street Food! I went to Yunnan Nan Rd in People's Square, and the street is packed with street food, and culture! Location 1: 五芳斋-蛋黄肉粽 Ok, right here we have a special festival food, called the zongzi, which is rice with filling wrapped in bamboo leaves! So the north and south always do things in contradiction to each other, so for soy milk the north drinks it sweet, the south salty, for zongzi, the north would have sweet fruity fillings, the south stuff with meat. So this one I have right now is stuffed with meat and salted duck yolk. Location 2: 洪长兴-牛肉煎包 The outside of the pastry is very crispy, the inside is A little fatty juicy oily ball of glee. Super hot inside, the beef flavor is strong, the taste of onion is strong too, very bold flavor! Location 3: 大壶春-生煎包 Right Shengjian dumplings some of my favourite dumplings ever, a Shanghai classic, and I’ve heard good things about this place, this place Dahuchun supposedly is in the Michelin Guide, I’m excited to try it. First of all to tell if a Shengjian bao is good or not you have to check its bottom, and is it crispy, look at that, yes it is, it’s almost like a stamp at the bottom! There’s a saying in Chinese about these fillings, 咸中带甜, meaning its supposed to be salty but with a touch of sweetness in there, and yes absolutely. That is delicious. Location 4: 鲜得来-排骨年糕 Ok this is a classic Shanghai pairing, the fried ribs and sticky rice cakes, of all these years I’ve been in Shanghai I’ve never tried this, partially because I don’t like rice cake. It’s sticky and chewy and not a lot of flavor, but I’m going to try this pairing with an open mind, the ribs are quite nice, the sauce is what makes it, the sticky rice cake I knew I wasn’t going to be a fan.
