I knew the Balrogs before they became Balrogs. Before they were demons of fire and shadow. Before they served Morgoth in the depths of Angband. I knew them when they were beautiful. When they were Maiar of light and song who worked the great forges of Valinor. When they created wonders and sang while they worked. I am Ingwion, one of the first Elves to wake at Cuiviénen, and I watched the fire spirits fall into darkness. And I have mourned them ever since. They had names once. Ruinë, who worked with blue flame and crafted gemstones that captured starlight. Ulvaron, whose white-hot fire could shape any metal. And Axantur, the greatest of them, whose gold-red flames sang as he forged. They were artists. Creators. Joyful beings who loved their work and shared their gifts freely. And then Morgoth came. And he showed them that fire could destroy as beautifully as it could create. And they followed him. And they became the Balrogs.I returned to Middle-earth during the Wars of Beleriand. And I met them again on the battlefield. Ruinë at Gondolin. Ulvaron at Nirnaeth Arnediad. And Axantur, my friend, wreathed in shadow and flame, unrecognizable except for the fire he carried. I have killed Orcs and felt nothing. But when I saw what the Balrogs had become, I wept. Because evil is not just what it creates. It is what it unmakes.
