The end result is a foolproof ability to name any note on the guitar, quickly and easily. We are going to use a method that relies on its success for that fact that, for musicians, it is often easier to remember what we hear than what we see. Lets start with the first stage of the drill. I want you to chant out loud the seven letters of the musical alphabet. Ready? After four.. A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C... That was pretty easy wasn't it? Second stage: we are going to add a sharp after each note -- like this: A A# B B# C C# ... Remember out loud with me to a good rhythm: A A# B B# C C# ... Third stage: Here's a reminder of the ascending chromatic scale: this reminds us that the notes E and B are not followed by sharps so lets repeat the last chant without those two sharp notes . A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A... Ok now we pick up the guitar. Starting on the open 6th string we are going to play all the notes up the fretboard to the twelfth fret and say their names as we play them. This is exactly like what we have just been doing, but starting the sequence on E instead of A E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E Ok that's the ascending scale now lets look at the descending one. This always presents people with a bigger problem for the simple reason that the letters are running in reverse alphabetical order. But here's a neat trick to help with that. Take the musical alphabet and reverse it. Extend the sequence a couple of octaves and suddenly you can spot two three-letter words Bag and Fed. Trying to remember the reverse alphabet as g f e d c b a is tricky but remembering it as BAG FED C is a whole lot easier! Neat trick eh? So on to the chanting drills for the descending chromatic scale. First stage Just chant the letters Bag Fed C with me after four: B A G F E D C B A G F E D C Stage two: add a flat after each letter: B Bb A Ab G Gb F Fb E Eb D Db C Cb ... Stage three: remember the descending chromatic scale has no flat after F and C So let's drop the flats after F and C in our chant: B Bb A Ab G Gb F E Eb D Db C ... Now we're ready to complete the whole drill on the guitar. On the bottom E string play and say these notes with me first all the way up from open to 12 fret using the ascending scale. Then all the way back down from 12 to open using the descending scale. E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E Then down E Eb D Db C B Bb A Ab G Gb F E Now the same on the A string A A# B C C# D D#E F F# G G# A And back down the descending scale A Ab G Gb F E Eb D Db C B Bb A Then the D string D D#E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D Db C B Bb A Ab G Gb F E Eb D The G string G G# A A# B C C# D D#E F F# G G Gb F E Eb D Db C B Bb A Ab G The B string B C C# D D#E F F# G G# A A# B B Bb A Ab G Gb F E Eb D Db C B And finally the top E string E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E E Eb D Db C B Bb A Ab G Gb F E And that's Chromatic Chanting! Not some weird religious practice, but a really fast effective way of mastering a basic method of naming notes anywhere on the fretboard. Hope you enjoyed that See you later!
