The Beauty of Dispersion and Gathering The National Dance Company of Korea, which continues to write new chapters in the history of Korean dance, embarks on another challenge, drawing inspiration from sangjo, one of Korea’s most iconic musical forms. Sanjo is a form of traditional music in which diverse rhythms gather and disperse, creating a melodic flow. It is performed by a seasoned musician who layers their individuality and improvisation over a foundation of tradition, earning comparisons to Western jazz for its balance of tradition and spontaneity. What kind of free-flowing energy and movement will the bodies of the National Dance Company dancers, who have devoted their lives to mastering Korean dance, create on stage when they encounter the music of sanjo? In June 2021, the National Theater of Korea eagerly awaits the birth of a performance where dance becomes like music, and music like dance, through the National Dance Company. The choreography is led by Choi Jin-wook, a former principal dancer of the National Dance Company and currently the resident choreographer of the Gyeonggi Provincial Dance Company. Known for his ability to blend modern sensibility with tradition, Choi is recognized as a leading choreographer in Korea. Joining him as a collaborative choreographer is Lim Jin-ho from the Goblin Party, a contemporary dance group known for its unique and playful performances. Lim’s participation brings greater diversity of interpretation and precision in movement, enhancing the choreography’s distinction. The choreography created by these two artists captures both the depth of traditional Korean dance and fresh, inventive ideas, offering the audience something truly distinctive. The stage design, which shifts in response to the rhythms, is also a key feature. Renowned for his bold mise-en-scène across various genres, director Jung Ku-ho joins the production. The stage is visually represented by a 6-meter-wide boulder and circular LED installations, embodying the beauty of dispersion and gathering. The audience will experience Jung’s signature artistic touch, with a focus on minimalism and beauty, as the stage transforms into a picturesque canvas.
