(19 Oct 2020) Already facing a huge demand amid the coronavirus pandemic, a Czech hospital bed maker received an order that was impossible to turn down, following the government's announcement of building a field hospital for 500 COVID-19 patients at Prague's exhibition ground. Just hours before that announcement, Prime Minister Andrej Babis approached the Linet company with a request to deliver beds for the facility and even more. Hectic activities and negotiations between the company and the government are expected to result in signing a deal any time soon to deliver a total of 1,620 hospital beds, 420 for intensive care units. Linet executive director Tomas Kolar said what would normally take a year or even up to 18 months, in this case "it would be one week between the prime minister's call and the first delivery." "This is, of course, a very special situation for us", Kolar told the Associated Press. The local health system has been under pressure and hospitals are filling up with an influx of patients. As the number of people currently down with the virus surpassed 100,000, over 3,500 of them need hospitalization with almost 600 at intensive care, according to government figures released on Monday. The Health Ministry predicted the system could reach its capacity around the end of October. Under normal circumstances, such an order would not be a problem for a firm that is expected to make 120,000 beds this year, 10,000 more than in 2019 and is considered the top European producer that sell its products in over 100 countries around the globe. With the Czech Republic facing a record surge in new infections, it is a matter of utmost urgency. The 7-day rolling average of daily new cases in the country has risen over the past two weeks from 23.81 new cases per 100,000 people on October 4 to 75.74 new cases per 100,000 people on Sunday, the third worst in the world following the Holy See and Andorra. The Czech hospitals have recently increased the number of beds available for COVID-19 patients to some 10,000, plus 2,000 at intensive care. The field hospital in Prague is currently meant to be used as a last resort.
