Erich Lachmann was born on the 6th of November 1909 in Legnica then part of the German Empire. On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. In spring of the same year the then 23 year old Lachmann joined the paramilitary organization Stahlhelm or the Steel Helmet. Stahlhelm emerged after the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914 and ended with German defeat on 11 November 1918. The organization was founded in December 1918, and it was composed largely of disillusioned veterans who had fought in the war and felt disconnected from the Weimar Republic government, which existed between 1918 and 1933. During the interwar period Stahlhelm was one of the largest and most influential veterans' organizations in Germany. It provided support and camaraderie for war veterans, advocated for their rights and benefits, and promoted nationalistic and conservative political ideologies. Although Stahlhelm was not directly aligned with any political party, its members were often sympathetic to right-wing nationalist sentiments. Over time, some of its members joined or supported the Nazi Party and by the mid-1930s, Stahlhelm was absorbed into the Sturmabteilung also known as the SA, the Nazi Party's paramilitary wing. After joining Stahlhelm, Lachmann also became a member of the SA but never joined the Nazi Party. In September 1933 Lachmann was conscripted into the auxiliary police force and attended an Unterführer or junior leader training course. Despite failing the course, most probably due to later-described extremely primitive intellectual abilities, he was promoted to Oberwachtmeister or senior sergeant. During the 1930's Lachmann worked for various companies as a bricklayer. The Second World War began on 1 September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In September 1941, Lachmann was stationed at Trawniki camp, where he was tasked with retraining Ukrainian prisoners of war to serve as SS guards at Nazi extermination camps. SS and police officials inducted, processed, and trained 2,500 auxiliary police guards known as Trawniki men at Trawniki training camp between September 1941 and September 1942. Virtually all of them had been Soviet prisoners of war. Deployment in the operations of the "Final Solution" -which was the mass murder of Europe’s Jews - became a key function of the Trawniki-trained guards. The Trawniki men provided the guard units for the Operation Reinhard killing centers at Bełżec, Sobibor, and Treblinka. German SS and police authorities deployed the Trawniki men in the deportation operations from both large and small ghettos in German-occupied Poland and as escorts for the transport trains from ghettos to killing centers. Among the ghettos in which Trawniki-trained guards were deployed were also Warsaw, Lublin, and Krakow.
