First opened on September 8th, 1978, Lakeforest Mall was the first indoor shopping mall in Montgomery County, and one of the first in the in the country to offer an Olympic size indoor ice-skating rink. The bright lights, vibrant colors, and catchy music that echoed throughout the mall created a lively and wondrous atmosphere. At the center of the mall, patrons could enjoy live performances at the indoor amphitheater and stage, surrounded by a water filled moat, with an elevator to deliver the talent, or Santa Clause. One could feel a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air while walking through the doors at the main entrance. If you were a kid at the time, you might remember being given a balloon or kazoo at the grand opening. As time passed, Lakeforest Mall experienced many changes in response to new trends in the community; but there was always something for everyone. Children could ride the carousel or play at Professor Frogs Playground, while teenagers could hang out with friends at the arcade or catch a movie at the theater. Adults could browse the latest fashions, grab a bite to eat at the food court, or simply soak up the ambiance and people-watch. Despite its eventual decline, Lakeforest Mall will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who experienced its magic. It was a unique and special part of our greater community, that brought people together and created countless cherished memories. If you have old photos of the mall, we would love to see them.
