Disappointing test, CB didn't reach at all which was surprising. PMR did okay on 0.5 watts but I forgot to save the recording. PMR on 1w was better. Not the best test to be honest but this is how it goes. I'll return at a later point and try again when it's not windy and cloudy. Brief but nice mooch. 🙂 I have been reading about the range issue and found this on 4x4cb dot com : ""Unfortunately the range of the handhelds using their own aerial is very limited. If you can connect them to an external aerial then they will work as well as a conventional CB but on their own short aerial you are looking at a range of approximately : 0.5 - 1 miles handheld to handheld 1 - 2 miles handheld to vehicle 1 - 3 miles handheld to base (with big base aerial)"" Years ago I had two RadioShack TCR 1014 handhelds which were almost identical to midland 42, I noticed back then that the range was pretty poor on their antennas. Back then I didn't really understand why. It seems to be because the long wavelength and small antenna simply is not compatible. I'm still surprised that with a practical line of sight they would not manage the 22 miles. I will repeat the test at some point with a ' proper ' antenna. I suppose the obsession with handheld CBs goes back to when I was a kid and they were mega cool but the modern reality is that even a low power pmr446 radio is more convenient, cheaper and has far superior range with a handheld than CB is suitable for. Radios are midland Alan 42 CB 27mhz UK radio and retevis rb628 pmr446 It's worth mentioning that I had a perfect 4g signal on my phone predictably from such a place and was able to access jodrell sdr. Okay unless shtf and then making a 22 mile transmission might be useful. 53.4787932, -2.0183978 is the lat long of the trig point Wildbank trig point is apparently the highest point in Tameside which I highly doubt because the stench of skunk in hattersley and Ashton clearly means people are much higher than Wildbank!
