LASERS IN ENT SURGERY What is LASER? Laser stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". The basic principle of a Laser is that energy waves all have the same frequency and phase thus making them powerful tools for cutting. So a medical laser is a powerful cutting tool. The difference between normal sharp cutting tools and a laser is that the cut tissue bleeds with normal steel instruments. A laser however cuts and cauterizes at the same instance- this makes it an important tool as a knife since it can cut and stop bleeding at the same time. There are different types of Lasers and each have unique properties which are used during surgery. The commonly used Lasers in ENT are Diode Laser - creates intense heat and causes considerable scar tissue KTP Laser - targets blood vessels selectively and leaves normal tissue intact CO2 Laser- a very precise cutting tool, it is housed in its own cable arm and can be used along with an operating microscope. However, there are more cutting tools available now and you must discuss those with your ENT specialist. From the good old fashioned Cautery and Diathermy (which use electric current to create heat), to Coblation (which uses low heat radiofrequency over a layer of saline to separate tissue) or a microdebrider ( a powered instrument that has channels for cutting, saline irrigation and suction) the ENT surgeon has many alternatives to Lasers. Each method has its own specific indications and your ENT surgeon knows those- it is better to ask the ENT Specialist as to how he would be performing that particular procedure rather than demand a particular method.
