A Decade in the Making: The Evolution of the New Development Bank

In July 2015, the New Development Bank (NDB), formerly the BRICS Development Bank, was established by the BRICS states of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Since then, the NDB has built an impressive record of milestones, each one laying the groundwork for careful institutional building. Nearly a decade since the founding of the NDB and more than two decades since Jim O’Neill originally coined the term ‘BRICs,’ what has been the growth and evolution of the BRICs-led NDB? How is the Southern-led institution reshaping the development finance landscape? And what can we expect from the Bank in its second decade? Gregory T. Chin edited a Policy Insights Special Section for the journal Global Policy, consisting of 10 articles by a diverse group of scholars assessing the evolution and growth of the NDB in its first decade. In this micro-webinar, Gregory T. Chin discusses the evolution and growth of the NDB, since its founding nearly a decade ago, with Rebecca Ray. Gregory T. Chin is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow with the Global China Initiative at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center and an Associate Professor of Political Science/Political Economy at York University, Canada. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Institute at the Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies. Rebecca Ray is a Senior Academic Researcher with the Global China Initiative at the Boston University Global Development Policy Center.
