The Grandfather Couloir

On March 1, 2016 Chauncey McCarthy and I snowboarded the Grandfather Couloir on the west face of the Little Wasatch, directly opposite of the resort across Bear Creek at Telluride, Colorado. We brought ropes and multiple anchor options, anticipating at least two rappels, but opted instead for a ropeless descent. This couloir descends about 2,000 vertical feet down from 12,500 into the Telluride sidecountry and back into town. Josh Schutz gave us additional eyes and assisted via radio from the top of Lift 6, helping us navigate some of the trickier sections of the couloir. Music: Amadou & Mariam feat. We love what we do and feel incredibly grateful to be able to have the opportunity to get in and out of a line of this magnitude safely, we could not have done it without the help of many. Months or sometimes years of planning can go into a line. This edit is such a small part of what goes on when we are going into something like this, and safety always comes first no matter what. And of course we wouldn't do it if it wasn't fun. There have been many deaths in the backcountry and on-piste this year and this is certainly dedicated to them. Stay safe and have fun out there.
